This forum was created to help get Trinidad and Tobago out of the political two party system that we seem bound by. The intention of this forum is to allow members of the public to help fix the problem of our collective short term memory in terms of public corruption.
Today is the 28th of May 2020 and we are just coming out of conquering the COVID-19 pandemic according to our official records. Over the last two months we have seen a massive increase in public media addresses and people paying attention to them. Because of this, a lot of alleged transgressions have been brought to light from Trinidad's breach of the Rio Treaty to the $80 million dollar contract to Amalgamated Security for prisoner transport which was quickly discovered to be unnecessary once COVID-19 restrictions began to be put in place. Many people have become weary of the PNM leadership and have begun to ask themselves "is the PNM really the lesser of two evils?". It sure seemed so back in 2015, the same way that the UNC is probably feeling like the "lesser of two evils now", but, only one thing can be said with any surety; both the UNC and the PNM have been given their chance and by most metrics, many of us are worse of now that we used to be while members of both parties seem to be isolated from the ill effects of their leadership that continues to befall the rest of us. But as PNM, being the "party of the day", continues to dominate the media, so do their transgressions, as those of any previous administration continues to be swept under the rug. As long as we continue to forget the transgressions of the previous administration we will continue to oscillate and be bound by the two party system where the incumbent always seems like the lesser of two evils. I am not going to pretend to know how to get out of our current predicament. All I know is that all possible solutions will need to rely on public transparency and the fixing of our public short term memory. My hope is that with your help, these forums form that foundation so that we may hold all current and future leaders accountable as it should be.
